What if a river could carry you between two worlds?
Between the past and the present, between here and there?
On an unremarkable Wednesday afternoon, 9 year old Ari discovers a sparkling rock beneath the water of the Merri Creek in Melbourne.
Curious to see if it sparkles on the inside, she cracks it open and is drawn into a magical portal to the Jeonjucheon Stream in Korea.
Here, she comes across Sori, a girl who also loves spending her afternoons playing by the water, and building doltap - small towers of stones that hold wishes.
As Ari tumbles through the portal, she scatters the stones of Sori’s doltap, sending the rocks - and the wishes they held - flying across both realities.
To put things right, Ari and Sori must return the rocks, to where they belong.
But which rocks came from which world?
Bringing Youbi Lee’s rich shadow worlds and Sooji Kim’s sonic mastery into the innovative form of Threshold’s immersive experiences, ‘Sound & Water’ is a story about friendship across distance and time - and how we can find connections with people and places that seem impossibly far away.

How will ‘Sound & Water’ be delivered?
Sound & Water will be developed across the next 2 years, premiering in early 2028 in 3 different ways which can be programmed together or individually.
A digital experience for families - a form which Threshold have established through their works ‘Mountain Goat Mountain’ and ‘The Flying Canoe’
An immersive and hybrid experience, with live performers to be presented in arts centres and theatres
And a culturally expanded digital version for schools.
We are looking to travel to Korea in 2027 to record the audio that will form the basis for the immersive soundscape on which the story will flow.
We would love to hear from partners in Australia and Korea who might be able to support this development - and are interested in being updated as we prepare this beautiful story for presentation.
