My name is Marita Davies, and I am the author of ‘The Flying Canoe’.

‘The Flying Canoe’ is a story set in Kiribati, which is where I'm sitting right now.

I wrote ‘The Flying Canoe’ because I wanted to introduce people to Kiribati.

Kiribati is often in the media about its facing the front lines of climate change and rising sea levels, but it is so much more than that. It is about culture, community, joy, singing, dancing, ancient stories.

And so I just wanted to teach people a little bit more about the country that I'm from.

We're here in Kiribati right now to work with the Ministry of Education, so we can create resources so you feel confident teaching your students about Kiribati. Not only about ‘The Flying Canoe’, but also the themes that we bring up in ‘The Flying Canoe’.
