ABOUT ‘THE FLYING CANOE’ TEAM

The development of ‘The Flying Canoe’ started in 2022, beginning with a Kiribati Cultural Day in Kyneton - which included performances by the Kiribati community living in Victoria at the time.

Recordings of the singing and dancing performed on the day form an integral part of the original audio experience, which was released for families to experience in their own homes in 2023.

Following the success of the audio experience, the original audio was adapted into a hybrid performance for families at Dream Big (Adelaide) and Federation Square (Melbourne) in 2024.

Thanks to the support of the Australian Government through the Australian Cultural Diplomacy Grants Program we have been able to reimagine the audio for the classroom. The resources that have been created for the education version have been done in consultation with the Kribati Ministry of Education, the Kiribati Teachers College and numerous I-Kiribati artisans, storytellers and craftspeople.

KIRIBATI TEACHERS COLLEGE

Our thanks also to the teachers at the Kiribaati Teachers College who shared their thoughts about how this audio work could be useful in their schools.

VICTORIAN KIRIBATI ASSOCIATION

At every stage, this project has been supported by the Victorian Kiribati Association, a cultural community group for I-Kiribati people, friends and family based in Melbourne and the Victoria region.

From helping to gather the I-Kiribati community for the Cultural Day held in Kyneton, to providing suggestions for performers in the hybrid version at Federation Square, to assisting with costumes and the logistical presentation of Mauri Melbourne, we have been grateful for their commitment to ensuring that the I-Kiribati community has been represented and involved in the creative processes.
