Do you remember how to spin magic?

Do you remember which side is the ocean side and the lagoon side?

Have you got your canoe? Have the teachers set up a different kind of canoe?

All sitting in your canoe and ready to go?

WHERE IS KINOIA? Did she get put into something?

  • Theme: All together now

This warm-up game is based on the game, Captain’s Coming!

Students stand in an open space.

As the teacher you are the leader of the canoe and you are calling out orders to your canoe crew. The last student/s to obey the order is out. The game ends when one canoe crew member remains.

    Orders might include:

    • Hoist the sail: crew members mime hoisting a sail

    • Giant mud crabs: crew members turn their hands into pincers, sideways walk and stick their bottoms out

    • Ocean/lagoon/north/or south side of the room: students move to the specific side of the room called using the markings previously placed in the classroom from Pre-episode 1: Learning experience 4

    • Stuck in the mud! Crew members must crawl along the ground to escape the sticky mud

    • Row the canoe: in pairs crew members sit on the ground and mime rowing the canoe with their oars

    • Magic spinning: crew members use the magic spinning sequence from ‘The Flying Canoe’

    • Dolphins jumping above the waves: crew members become dolphins jumping above the waves

    • Balance on the rocks: crew members must hold their ‘balance’ as they walk across rocks

The class might like to come up with their own orders inspired by ‘The Flying Canoe’ that they can incorporate into the game.

  • Students form pairs and find a space in the room.

    • Ask one student to hunch down into a tight ball. Explain to students they will be a tiny creature in encased in a shell. Students can either imagine the shell around them, or if available, students can put a piece of fabric over them.

    • The other student chooses their favourite gentle song they know that they can either quietly sing or hum.

    • Students quietly sing or hum their song to the creature to gently entice it out of their shell.

    • If the creature likes the song they hear, ask them to gently crawl out from the shell.

Students swap roles and play the game again.

Coming back together as a class, discuss with students:

    • which creatures were enticed out of their shell?

    • why the song encouraged them to come out of their shell?

Ask students if they know of a sea creature that lives in a shell. If students do not mention a hermit crab, introduce the creature to students and discuss the unique features of the sea creature, including that they can be sung out of their shell!

    • Using the link, play for students the footage of Martia’s ____ who sung the hermit crab out of its shell when they visited Kiribati to collect material to share with students and their teachers as they ventured on ‘The Flying Canoe’.

  • Theme: We use the things we have in reach

As Kiribati is made up of 32 atolls and 1 island you can find a lot of different shells on the beaches.

A favourite game of Kiribati children is spinning shells (show video/image).

The aim of the game is to see how many times you can spin the shell.

Provide students with different sized shells (including ___ shells similar to those in the video/image) and with their elbow buddy:

    • can they predict which shells might be best for spinning?

experiment with spinning different shells, exploring:

    • how the shells moved.

    • how the size and shape of the shells influence how well the shells spin.

    • play a game of shell spinning, keeping score of how many spins they could do.

At the end of the game ask students to discuss with their table group and/or as a class:

    • How the shells moved?

    • How did the size and shape of the shells influence how they moved?

    • How did the outcome of the experiment compare with their predictions?
